Operator - Heavy Equipment
Job Description
This role is responsible for operating the company's heavy-duty and off-highway equipment to support construction, maintenance, logistics, and operational activities. The operator ensures that earth-moving, loading, hauling, and lifting operations are performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company safety standards, operating procedures, and regulatory requirements.
The position will report to the Supervisor - Transport.
Key Accountabilities
- Conduct pre-start inspections to ensure equipment is safe and operational, and report any defects promptly.
- Operate company vehicles and heavy machinery safely for transporting personnel, materials, and equipment.
- Perform earth-moving and construction tasks such as excavation, grading, loading, and hauling according to work plans.
- Ensure proper handling, securing, and movement of loads.
- Adhere strictly to Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies, site rules, and hazard control measures.
- Participate in safety activities and report incidents, faults, and unsafe conditions.
- Maintain accurate records, including logbooks, inspection checklists, fuel usage, and maintenance reports.
- Carry out basic equipment care, cleaning, and coordinate with maintenance teams for servicing.
- Collaborate with supervisors and site teams to achieve project goals efficiently and safely.
To be successful in this role, you will be required to have:
- Grade 12 School Certificate
- Valid Heavy Equipment Operator Licence or equivalent certification
- Valid driver’s licence (Class C / CE or equivalent)
- At least 2 years’ practical experience gained in a similar maintenance role.
- Strong knowledge of heavy equipment operation and controls.
- Ability to perform routine equipment inspections and basic maintenance checks.
- Understanding of site safety procedures and hazard identification.
- Ability to read work instructions, site plans, and operational procedures.
- Familiarity with load management and earth-moving techniques.
- Ability to operate equipment for extended periods under varying weather and site conditions.
